Polymers
Total Marks: 17(Subjective Type)Time: 33 Minutes
2.  Write short answers to any six (6) questions.[6 × 2 = 12]
(i)
Write the examples of Plastics.
Polythene, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene, Teflon and PET.
(ii)
Write the properties of plastics
Plastics are light weight, flexible, durable, strong, resistant to chemicals and water, poor conductors of heat and electricity, and cheap to produce.
(iii)
How 3D layer of Polymer are formed?
In 3D printing, a polymer material (such as filament or resin) is melted or cured and deposited layer by layer according to a digital design until the 3D object is formed.
(iv)
What is Synthetic fibers? Give example.
Synthetic fibers are man-made fibers produced from chemical polymers, not from plants or animals. Examples: nylon, polyester and acrylic.
(v)
Write the properties of Synthetic fiber.
They are strong, durable, light weight, wrinkle resistant, quick drying and resistant to chemicals, moths and mildew.
(vi)
Which natural fiber does acrylic resemble and why?
Acrylic resembles wool, because it is soft, warm and light, and is used as a cheaper substitute for woollen clothing.
(vii)
Why do plastics cause environmental problems?
Most plastics are non-biodegradable and take hundreds of years (up to about 1000 years) to decompose, so they pile up on land, in rivers and in oceans.
(viii)
Why is Burning Plastic dangerous?
Burning plastic releases toxic gases and fumes that pollute the air and cause breathing problems and other health hazards.
(ix)
Are natural polymers hazardous for the environment? Explain why?
No. Natural polymers such as cellulose, starch and proteins are biodegradable; microorganisms break them down into harmless substances, so they do not accumulate in the environment.
Note: Attempt any one question.[5 × 1 = 5]
3.
Write a note on plastics?
Plastics are synthetic polymers made from monomers obtained mainly from petroleum. They are light, flexible, durable, strong and chemically resistant, so they are used in packaging, bottles, pipes, toys, electrical insulation and many household items. Millions of tons are made every year, but because they are not biodegradable they also cause serious pollution.
4.
Describe the effects of synthetic polymers on the environment.
  • Most synthetic polymers are non-biodegradable and remain for hundreds of years.
  • Plastic waste pollutes land, rivers, oceans and air.
  • Animals, birds and sea life swallow or get trapped in plastic waste.
  • Burning plastic releases toxic gases that harm air quality and health.
  • Plastic waste blocks drains and causes flooding.
  • Remedy: reduce, reuse and recycle plastics.
